Historically nikon has never cared for the 70-200 f4. 15 years after the nikon D1 came out, in 2012, the first 70-200 f4 was announced. In between that span of time the 2.8 was revised 2 or 3 times. Because the f4 simply doesn't sell well enough to justify it being a priority for nikon.

Well, I'd say the 24-70/4 is about as much of a kit lens as the Z6 is an entry level ILC. Camera manufacturers had/have the habit to offer plasticky lenses in kit with entry level cameras. When I was young(er) , the "kit" lens was the 'ninfty fifty', namely the 50/1.8Nikon z 24-120 f4 or Nikon z 28-75 f2.8 ? Feb 10, 2021. #4. Depends. If you are older, like me, I would rather carry a lighter lens all day, than a big heavy lens. If I were 20 years younger, the weight of the 24-70/2.8 would not bother me. It is true what Nikon says about the benefit of the larger mount diameter and the shorter flange length of the Z-mount. New Z 24-70mm F2.8 is shorter (126mm vs. 154mm), much lighter (805g vs. 1070g), and gives a better MTF than the already-good F version. The arrival of the mirrorless age is undeniable. (There is a 24-70mm f/4 S, but there’s no 70-200mm f/4 S on the roadmap yet, or indeed any lightweight telephoto.)
