If you're looking at Steam figures, most players prefer the main client over the Steam client, so Steam is only showing a fraction of the actual playerbase. Console right now is probably a few hundred really active players per platform. It will be tens of thousands for the first week or two of the new league, and then drop off from there.
dunno if can check the amount of active players in standard, because its full of dead hardcore characters that ppl didnt delete. it like the graveyard. According to PoeApp, a little less than 10% of trades made in the last hour or so were from Standard. Perhaps not 1:1, but it should give you an idea.

Most players play the temporary leagues. Standard is the permanent league and has been running since Path of Exile's launch. There are many more items in the economy
